Nikon D90 in extreme weather

Posted by George Collazo On December - 15 - 2008

This is it, if you thing I go easy with my gear, you tought wrong. I used my Nikon’s including the old but great F100, F5, D200 to the extremes while living and shooting in Puerto Rico. Now what best place to take a Nikon D90 for a spin that the cold weather of Minnesota? I visited this place back in mid Authum and went back yesterday Saturday the 14 for a re-shoot. The landscape was totally changed and found myself in a surreal scene. Poking the ice with my tripod to check how safe it was, I managed to walk over the frozen river and snap these shots. My D90 was exposed to the cold air and fine mist for almost one hour without a glitch. This by any means is my D200 or F5 in terms weather sealing but proved to be a realiable camera under moderated/slightly severe conditions. I took with me my trusty Nikkor 17-55 AF-S F/2.8, my Tokina 12-24 F/4 and droped in my camera bag a Nikon SB-600 flash just in case.

I shot this short video clip with the D90. Made the slight mistake of not locking the exposure. I’m saying hi to a group of friends in the Spanish forum.

New Orbis Ring Flash now shipping!

Posted by George Collazo On December - 11 - 2008

Word is spreading, the new Orbis Riing Flash is being delivered. This flash will make a good alternative and almost have the price of the Ray’s Ring Flash. At $300 I passed on the Ray Flash and got the AlienBees ABR 800 for $99 more. At $169.99 the Orbis Ring flash sounds like a better deal. Judging from the pictures on their site, it does seem that is works well. Before this Blog was born I reported my .02 cents on the Alienbees Flash ABR800 here-». The Orbis Ring Flash works with a variety of Nikon flashes as well as Canon’s. For the moment they are shipping from Hong Kong & Japan.
