A few sample pictures with the Nikon 35mm F/1.8 DX lens

Picture of Nikkor 35mm F/1.8 DX lensA good buddy of mine sent me in the new and elusive Nikkor 35mm F/1.8 DX lens for a test ride. I was amazed by the quality of this little and affordable lens. The lens comes with the hood and a storage pouch (lens case) included. From Nikon’s website:

To fulfill the needs of digital photographers owning Nikon cameras with DX-sized sensors, Nikon produces the 35mm f/1.8 AF-S DX Lens.

This lens produces an angle of view similar to what a 50mm lens would produce on a full-frame/FX camera and thusly functions as a “normal” lens. Prior to the digital explosion, most shooters would begin their exploration into the world of photography with a “normal” lens with a large maximum aperture.

A lens of this type is the traditional standby for low-light shooting, careful composition, and street shooting. This 35mm f/1.8 Nikkor lens recreates that experience for DX format shooters who have been seeking a comparable “normal” lens.

• Fast “Normal” Lens: The 35mm focal length closely matches a 50mm lens in the FX format. This is perceived to be a natural lens as it provides an undistorted angle of view that is similar to what the unaided human eye perceives.
• Versatile: A desirable lens for low-light, travel, environmental portraiture and overall general photography.
• Contains an Aspherical Lens Element: The incorporation of an aspherical element minimizes coma and other lens aberrations, further improving image integrity.
• Super Integrated Coating (SIC): This lens coating enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency with reduced flare.
• Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM): The motor embedded in the body of the lens enables fast, accurate and quiet autofocusing.
• 7-blade Diaphragm: A rounded iris produces a more natural rendering of out-of-focus image elements.
• Close Focusing The 35mm f/1.8 AF-S can focus as close as one foot

Auto Focus speed on the new Nikon 35mm F/1.8 is fast and silent, but not blazing fast. As the new Nikon 50mm f/1.4, this lens has no internal focusing mechanism so don’t expect a big difference in AF speed ala Nikkor 17-55 AF-S or 24-70 AF-S F/2.8 for example. I own the 35mm F/2 AF-D and on a camera body with CAM 3500 it focuses almost as fast as the 35mm f/1.8 on a Nikon D90, D200. Out of focus elements (Bokeh) are very natural even at 7 blades on the diaphragm. I noticed that the lens has no window scale or any markings of any sort :o (

Nonetheless, the lens is very lightweight a small and makes a beautiful and powerful combination with your Nikon D90, D300, D5000 or D3000 for low light photographic situations. For $199 this lens is a total bargain. No wonder is so hard to put your hands on of them as of today.
